  • HISTORY
Hillcrest Elementary was built in 1953 and is located in central Lawrence just west of The University of Kansas. Hillcrest serves approximately 310 students in grades K-5 where students can attend full-day Kindergarten. Hillcrest is home to one of the district’s English as a Second Language programs. As a cluster site, students come from across Lawrence to attend Hillcrest in order to receive English language support. Our international population includes students from approximately 30 different countries, many of whom attend Hillcrest while their parents are studying at KU. Over sixty percent of Hillcrest students are English Language Learners which allows the school to receive supplemental resources to ensure that students attain English proficiency at high levels in core academic subjects to meet state mandated achievement standards. Hillcrest is also a Title I school which provides federal funded programs with the intent to improve the academic achievement of students who are economically disadvantaged. Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Title I funds enable us to employ and train highly qualified teachers and paraeducators. Hillcrest is comprised of over 40 full time staff members, including general education teachers, special education teachers, ESL teachers, reading and math teachers, special area teachers such as art, music, librarian, PE, paraeducators, a principal, office staff, and a school nurse.
